Rocks From Space Picture of the Day
February 11, 2006

Here is a scanned image of one of the early Acfer stones. A beautiful chondrite from the Hot Deserts of Northwest Africa. Purchased from Rolf Buhler (Swiss Meteorite Laboratory) in 1990.
As you can see it is extremely metal-rich with conspicuous shock melt veins. Met.Bull.96 classified it as an H4 chondrite, NHMCat has H3.7 and list member Jorn Koblitz's MetBase says it's an H3.9/4.
Its TKW is 561 grams, 4 pieces were found in Algeria in 1989. This beautiful end cut weighs 39.8 grams, approximate dimensions: 4.7 x 4.0 x 1.2 cm.
