Rocks From Space Picture of the Day
August 26, 2006

Axtell, CV3 thin section:
A deeply embayed, amoeboid CAI and a stunning, thick-rimmed BO (barred olivine) chondrule showing low (white and pale yellow) and second order (vivid turquoise blue) interference colors. Snugly nestled in-between are two colorful POP (Porphyritic Olivine Pyroxene) chondrules. The one on the right is made up of several olivine and pyroxene phenocrysts (large crystals), where as the one on the left is composed of  relatively small crystals but it sports one large, conspicuous pyroxene crystal that shows simple twinning (left part = greyish brown / right part = brick-red).
